Share Google Reader items on Google+

I’ve been using Google Reader to keep up-to-date on my favorite blogs, news stories and more. To share, I’ve always used the customizable Send To button at the bottom of each item. Sharing Google Reader items on Google+ however works differently and it took me a minute to figure out how..

[step 1] Log into Google Reader.

[step 2] Find an item you’d like to share via Google+.

[step 3] Notice gray “Share…” button on the black bar at the top of your screen. Click it to bring up a share dialog.

[step 4] Drag and drop the link of your Reader item into the share dialog, add a Circle of friends and click Share.

Note: you can still share Reader items on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and other social platforms using the customizable Send To button…it just won’t work with Google+.

–UPDATE–

As mentioned by some people, it’s true that the above described procedure does not work on all browsers…and ironically Chrome does not work…womp womp:

I can’t seem to drag-and-drop into the G+ “Share” window. I’ve had to right click the headline in reader, “copy link address,” and then paste it. Hopefully there’s a one-click solution at some point… or Sparks and Reader just get merged… or something.

Thanks, however the drag and drop of the links won’t work for me, I use Chrome 14.0.803.0. I need to copy and paste them.
    Any hint?

Thank you. This is exactly what I needed (for now).
Of course I wish google would implement some integrations between Reader and Google+… most of what people are doing on Google+ right now is nothing but sharing and commenting, which is plenty if you ask me.
I was hoping I could share my +1’s from the +1 tab in my profile, but that still hasn’t been implemented, so I was starting to get worried.

Sorry, but this doesn’t work for me — at least not when using chrome (which makes no sense). I’m unable to drag and drop anything into the grey Share box. I still have to do the clunky process of opening the link in a browser, and then copying and pasting it.

I cannot get this to work. (Linux + Firefox 8)

The Android Google Reader still doesn’t have sharing to + functionality. Anyone know RSS readers that do?

Works fine in Chrome. In fact, you can drag the link from the Reader tab to the Plus tab and then place it in the sharing box on Plus.

Nope, not for me. Tried Chrome 12 on both Windows and OSX…no beans in either one. Safari doesn’t work either by the by. I’m not hating, I don’t really use Chrome anyways so I don’t care mostly.

Yep, doesn’t work in chrome. Reader needs better integration.

In all honesty, if Google want their social media tools to be taken seriously they need to start getting them to talk to one another.

WHY can’t you share directly from Google Reader to Google+? It’s ridiculous that you can’t.

WHY doesn’t Google’s Chrome browser support the sharing work around described here? It’s ridiculous that it doesn’t.

Thanks, the drag and drop of the links worked well for me, I use Chrome.

Thanks for the tip. I’m sure they’ll get around to connecting these better. Getting social data on links shared is one of the main reasons Google did Plus to begin with.

In the meantime, yes, I confirmed that this drag and drop doesn’t work in Chrome, but there is a hack. In Reader, find the article you want to share, then just right-click (or click and hold on Mac) until you get the drop-down. Then select “Copy Link Address” and then past *that* into the URL field in the Google Plus link share, as outlined above by David.

Graceful? No. Hack? Yes. Fast and relatively painless? Well, yeah.

This is no longer active and the grayed “share” button on the reader is gone. It only seems to appear in another Google applications but Reader. This is very frustrating why is google doing this to its users?

On Chrome, as you can’t drag and drop the link, I right click, copy, and paste the link on Google + Share bar… I know, it’s not the most elegant solution, but it works for now, until Google upgrade Reader…

Thanks for the tip. Can’t wait for the API. I believe they are worried about abuse and spamminess, but there is room for that on the internet. As long as individuals keep their house clean (do not accept anyone and everyone and make good judgments) then there will be clean houses, so to say. Beauty of a good social application! Which Google Plus is. Probably the best. Patients guys they will get right soon. They’ll have to or we’ll do it for them right?

    Hi!!!

    I use this:

Gear > Reader settings > Send to > Create custom link
    Name: Google+
    URL: https://plusone.google.com/_/+1/confirm?url=${url}
    Icon URL :https://ssl.gstatic.com/s2/oz/images/favicon.ico

This open new tab and you can share (change your permissions, add comment…) :-
