Here’s another reason to go back to school during the recession: Get cheap software just for being a student. In a previous article I showed you how to get Office 2007 Ultimate for $60 bucks, now Microsoft is making their latest and greatest in operating systems available to students for $29.99. Here’s how:
[step 1] To obtain a free copy of Windows 7, check with your school to see if it participates in the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) program.
Click here to see if your school is enrolled in MSDNAA.
[step 2] To obtain a copy of Windows 7 for $29.99 you’ll need a school email account with an email address ending in .edu
Click here to purchase Windows 7 for $29.99 using your school email address.
[step 3] Spend money saved on books & supplies.
That’s it.

NOTE: The $29.99 version of Windows 7 is an UPGRADE version of Windows 7 Professional only! It is possible to do a clean install using a Windows 7 upgrade DVD, but it is not as straight-forward as installing the full version.
Update: Windows7 for $29 is no longer available, the price has gone up to $64 for students. An academic version of Office 2010 Professional can be ordered at http://www.microsoft.com/student/office/en-us/default.aspx for $79
Microsoft Windows7 Professional (upgrade) for $29 is BACK! Grab your copy with a valid .edu email address at: http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/us/software/windows/default.aspx Also, I have installed it on a brand new system from the downloaded ISO (clean install) without having to install any other OS first.
