If you are running iOS 6 on your apple iPhone, iPad or iPod, there can be instances where the mail app icon shows an incorrect number of unread email messages on an exchange activesync account. I’ve had this happen on my iPhone 4S and iPad 2 running iOS 6. Here’s how to fix it.
[the problem]
The mail app shows an incorrect unread email number.
[the solution]
To fix/reset the unread messages count, do the following:
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Mail, Contacts and Calendars.
- Tap the email account with the wrong unread email count.
- Move the email selector to the OFF position.
- Power down the device by holding the power button.
- Power up the device.
- Tap settings.
- Tap Mail, Contacts and Calendars.
- Tap the email email account again.
- Move the email selector to the ON position.
- Have a look at the mail app, the unread message count should be correct now.
That’s it.

I have iOS7.1 and it shows wrong unread count, I tried the workout suggested by you though it is for iOS 6, it didn’t resolve the issue. Please let me know if you have encountered such issue in iOS 7.

Working perfectly.
Works as a temporary fix for me. As soon as I get off of wireless, it does it again. Aggravating!
