Capture and record component video (YCrCb)

Hauppauge has just released the worlds first commercially available HD Component video capture device (review & unboxing). The HD PVR is can be picked up at selected retailers now and I want one before the MPAA shuts them down. SageTV has already announced that the it will work with their Media Center application and I can’t wait to try it out. I’ll keep you posted with updates when I get my hands on one.

UPDATE (July 2010)…It’s only two short years later and I still haven’t been able to justify the $200 dollars expenditure for this “magic box” (partly due to the recession eradicating my super awesome but kind of unnecessary toys budget). Until I finally manage to pick one up…here’s a picture of the unit to look at (it’ll be for inspiration):

    Hello

So… how is it going? With more content going HD, I would like to be able to have records through component to the PC and to wonder if my show will get blocked with the 5C code. That is why recording through firewire sucks.

No, fariji. Unfortunately there is no device (I know of) that will be able to capture an HDMI stream (in other words 1080p). I believe HDMI is pretty well encrypted, so I believe that’ll be a few years until that is available.

Component video though is 1080i (interlaced) and very close to 1080p as far as quality is concerned. So if you got the component cable pack for your PS3 you could then capture the output using the Hauppauge device.
